The process of transitioning from employer coverage to Medicare is complicated.  Despite an overwhelming amount of information, most individuals are confused about when to enroll in Medicare. With healthcare as the number one concern for retiring Americans, many older employees are hanging on to their employer health insurance (and delaying retirement) simply out of fear. This also adds significant stress to employees who are caregivers for older parents facing the same dilemma.

A 5000 person self insured group had a large percentage of employees who were at or over Medicare age (approximately 250 employees).

Seeing the need to provide Medicare guidance to their aging workforce, the group brought in Doctor’s Choice. Through a series of webinars and individual consultations powered by Medicare Checkup, an AI-driven decision support system allowing our team to analyze 2000+ options across 50 states, Doctor’s Choice was able to assist a handful of employees and their spouses with the transition to Medicare.

Amongst this initial group was an employee who had a spouse suffering from Stage IV cancer. Although she had a good prognosis, her claims averaged $1.3M a year on the company plan.

By helping the employee look at his spouse’s monthly costs and out of pocket expenses on the employer plan, we realized that the employee could have his spouse elect a robust Medicare supplemental plan which would cover 100% of her treatments with a minimal deductible. Although the monthly premiums were about $100 higher than his current spousal contribution, his spouse saved $2600 overall due to lower out of pocket expenses (and a bigger network).

It was an obvious choice for the employee to switch his spouse to Medicare, saving his spouse $2600 and the company $1.3M in claims.
